Leili Seifi is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Birjand, Iran. She is on the executive board of Association of Iranian Public Libraries. She conducted more than 50 Information literacy workshops at my University for postgraduate students and faculty members. She published more than 30 papers at national and international Journals in the field of public libraries, information literacy and digital preservation of cultural heritage and has presented articles at many international conferences.
Leili, can you briefly tell us what you do?
Thank you, at present I am associate professor of library and information science department at university of Birjand. Teaching and researching are my major activities which I am doing.
You were director of the Birjand University Library. In your opinion, can an academic library fulfill the same social function as a public reading library despite a different book heritage and function?
You see, the academic library strengthens and enhances the teaching, research and service of the University. Academic library promote intellectual growth and creativity by developing collections, facilitating access to information resources, teaching the effective use of information resources and critical evaluation skills and offering research assistance to meet the information needs of students and scholars. So, the academic library support scholarship and research productivity and foster their vitality. Whereas, Public libraries exist to serve the needs of the entire community from school children to the elderly. So I would say, academic library more focused on research and teaching rather than social activities, I would also should add, they conduct some social activities such reading club, exhibitions, or some other programs.
I was very curious about the Dr. George N. Atiyeh Prize 2021 contest. What is it about?
The George Atiyeh Prize was founded by the Middle East Librarians Association (MELA) in 1999 to honor George N. Atiyeh, retired Head of the Near East Section of the Library Congress, founding member of MELA and of the Middle East Microform Project, for his many contributions to Middle East librarianship and scholarship. Dr. Atiyeh is the first and only honorary member of MELA. The George Atiyeh Prize offers financial aid to attend the annual meetings of MELA and of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA). Awardees receive a cash award in addition to their registration fees for both the MELA and MESA annual conferences.
In addition to an adequate course of study, what other skills should the 21st century librarian have?
Librarians and library technicians are at the heart of many exciting developments in information service in the twenty-first century. I think they should equip themselves with skills such as: critical skills, creativity, collaboration, media & technology literacy, communication, productivity, leadership, social skills.

Dal 2020 membro dell'Osservatorio Formazione dell'Associazione Italiana Biblioteche. Autore di diversi articoli e interviste per Insula Europea sul tema degli archivi, delle biblioteche e del digital lending.
